Android 4 0 Anticipating The Arrival
Google has announced the launch of the latest version of Android: Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, in Hong Kong on Wednesday - and with it the shiny new Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
That’s all very well and good, but when is it coming to your Android smartphone? Will the smartphone in your hands be getting an upgrade to enjoy some of the new features like Face Unlock and the new Roboto font?
Google on Ice Cream Sandwich
Hugo Barra, product management director of Android has stated that the aim is to get Nexus S running Android 4.0 shortly after the release of the Galaxy Nexus device but that the original Google branded Nexus One is just too old to come to the party.
Samsung on Ice Cream Sandwich
Samsung Italy has confirmed that the update is coming - but possibly not until Q2 2012. Ice Cream Sandwich will hit its high end devices including the Galaxy S II, the Galaxy Note, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Galaxy Tab 8.9, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 and the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus around the same time.
Samsung Norway has recently confirmed that the update for the Samsung Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note will be arriving by the end of Q1, so we make that March.
UPDATE: The Samsung Galaxy S wont be getting the Ice Cream Sandwich update
UPDATE 2: The Nexus S did get the Android 4.0 update, however shortly afterward Google halted the rollout of the Android 4.0 update for the Nexus S, as users started to report problems with the mobile phones battery.
HTC on Ice Cream Sandwich
The official line from HTC to Pocket-lint is:
"We are excited about the latest update for Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, and are currently reviewing its features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans. Our goal for Android updates is to give every customer an improved user experience, which means balancing each phones unique hardware, HTC Sense experience and the Android kernel. While our goal is to upgrade as many of our recent devices as possible, we are committed to maintaining every phones performance and usability first. Please stay tuned for more updates on specific device upgrade plans."
UPDATE: HTC has confirmed the following:
"HTC has been working hard to get its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades ready, and we’re excited to announce that our first round of ICS upgrades will roll out by the end of March for the HTC Sensation and HTC Sensation XE, followed soon thereafter by the HTC Sensation XL," says the phone maker.
There is also hope for HTC EVO 3D, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire S and HTC Desire HD owners, with the company confirming that although they wont be getting the ICS update in March, they will be getting the update at some point in 2012.
"In addition, we can confirm Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades will be coming later this year to the HTC EVO 3D, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire S and HTC Desire HD. Stay tuned for more updates on Ice Cream Sandwich releases in the coming weeks," adds HTC.
Sony Ericsson on Ice Cream Sandwich
The official line from Sony Ericsson to Pocket-lint is:
"Sony Ericsson is currently rolling out the upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.4 across its entire 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio. This software upgrade will be available through a phased roll out in select markets. Beyond Gingerbread 2.3.4, we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us. Official Sony Ericsson communication regarding software upgrades will be published on http://blogs.sonyericsson.com."
UPDATE: Sony Ericsson has confirmed on 15 November 2011 that it will be bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to its 2011 range.
"There have been a few questions here on the blog and in our support forums regarding our upgrade plans beyond Gingerbread. We can today confirm that we plan to upgrade the entire 2011 Xperia portfolio to the next version of Android known as Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich.
We are working on merging our current Xperia experience with the new features in Android 4.0. More detailed information regarding this upgrade, timing and global availability will be communicated in due course here on the blog."
The 2011 Xperia Portfolio is the Xperia arc and arc S, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo and neo V, Xperia mini and mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active, Xperia ray as well as Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman.
Asus on Ice Cream Sandwich
"Asus Eee Pad Transformer will be getting update to ICS - but we can’t provide a schedule at this stage," Asus told Pocket-lint making it the first Ice Cream Sandwich tablet. Asus have subsequently confirmed that Ice Cream Sandwich will be rolled out to the Eee Pad Transformer following the update to the Eee Pad Transformer Prime on 12 January 2012.
LG on Ice Cream Sandwich
The official statement to Pocket-lint from LG is:
"LG is committed to offering the best smartphone experience on our Android Optimus phones. We are currently reviewing the latest Android OS release and will be making a decision with our carrier partners on a rollout schedule. Specific phone models and timing of updates will be posted on relevant local websites or at www.lg.com."
Although Unofficial reports came in that LG will not be updating the LG Optimus 2X to Ice Cream Sandwich the company was keen to debunk these on Facebook, stating:
"LG firmly denies the rumours that claim LG will not be providing the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) OS update for the LG Optimus 2X. These rumours are NOT true. LG is currently in the process of planning the ICS OS update for the LG Optimus 2X as well as other LG high-end smartphones. Detailed information on the ICS OS update schedule for specific models will be announced, once the ICS OS is publicly released by Google. Please stay tuned for more updates from LG."
UPDATE: According to LGs Facebook page, LG will begin rolling out the ICS Android 4.0 update between April and September 2012:
"LG will be offering the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) OS upgrade for a range of LG smartphones which were introduced this year. The global upgrade schedule will begin in the second and third quarters of 2012, which will be followed by a global roll out," said LG via Facebook.
"During the second quarter of 2012 upgrades will begin for the following smartphone models: the LG Optimus LTE, Prada phone by LG 3.0, the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus Sol, the LG my Touch Q and the LG Eclipse.
However owners of phones like the Optimus Black and the Optimus 3D will have to wait until some time after July for the ICS update:
"These upgrades will be followed by upgrades for the following smartphone models during the third quarter of 2012: the LG Optimus 3D, the LG Optimus Black, the LG Optimus Big, the LG Optimus Q2 and the LG Optimus EX."
Motorola on Ice Cream Sandwich
Having introduced the new Android superphone to assembled European journalists, Alain Mutricy, senior vice president portfolio and product management, candidly referred to Googles Hong Kong announcement in which Ice Cream Sandwich was launched.
Mutricy highlighted that although the Motorola RAZR had been designed for, and will be launching on, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, it has a plan in place to update the phone to Ice Cream Sandwich at the "start of 2012".
UPDATE: The company has now confirmed that the Motorola RAZR and Xoom amongst the Droid Bionic and US version of the RAZR will be getting the Ice Cream Sandwich update.
UPDATE 2: Motorola has now said for UK readers, the first Motorola devices to get Ice Cream Sandwich will be the Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi-only, the Xoom Family Edition and the Motorola RAZR. Rollouts will begin sometime between March and May.
Then the wait begins.
For Motorola Xoom 2 customers, youll have to wait until the summer to get your update. Motorola is saying the update is in development and that they are working to get it out for some time in Q3. Thats June to August for those who care.
After that its anyones guess of when or if youll get the update. Devices in that pile for UK readers include the Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi and 3G model, The Motorola Atrix and even the newly announced MotoLuxe and Motorola Pro+.
Motorola has also confirmed that if you own a Defy Mini, a Defy+, Milestone 2, Milestone, Defy MB525, Charm, Flipout, Milestone XT720, Backflip or Dext you wont be getting any updates. The version of Android you currently have is the version you are stuck with.
Viewsonic on Ice Cream Sandwich

The V350, 7e, 10e are our latest products to be announced as value propositions, all featuring Viewscene 3D the visual aspect of Android does not alter so much for the different versions of Android. We are currently evaluating ICS features that overlap with Viewscene 3D and how we best continue to deliver this to consumers as soon as we can without compromising the experience to consumers,"
ZTE, Acer, Dell, Huawei, and the rest on Ice Cream Sandwich
So far none of the companies have confirmed whether or not they will be bring Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) to their smartphones currently available on the market.

The History Behind The Technology Of Today
On our first anniversary i wrote an article which i listed the brief history behind the page. To start things up i never actually planned to make this blog in the first page. In 2011 i was introduced by my friend Avinaash about computer tech and within a few months i had became in love with computers and i can say that YouTube played a major role at this. Especially Linus from NCIX and Elric from The Tech Of Tomorrow. Also if not mistaken these are the first two channels which is subscribed to 3 years ago. Continuing down the road i continued liking computes until early 2012 when the smartphone industry boomed with Samsung and Apple i turned to phones. Within like 2 months i understood all the basics and continuing on i learned more till today. But before that; On the week which i created the blog i was actually still talking about computers and then in the end of the week which was a Friday, i thought to myself rather than always constantly nagging to my friend about the latest and greatest i thought of writing a blog in which i will share my knowledge to the people around the web. That is also where i got the inspiration for the first logo. On the day itself (Feb 10 2012) i was thinking about the blog while doing my daily rounds looking at the news from websites and then after time thinking i rested the matter and went to take a nap in the couch. I woke up 2 hours later when the skies were gloomy and the time was only 4PM and then i thought of a name for the page the technology of today then i started the blog with the help of my friend avinaash. He was writing content here for about 3 months then he left. The next part of the story is disclosed due to some issues if revealed will create some controversies. Coming back to the present day i actually was planning to close the blog but after some thought i decided not to. All the hard work i put on this blog is really priceless. As to that i then think back to that very day i created this blog and said that what i am doing now is the total opposite of what i thought of this blog when i created it 14 months ago. I created this soley to share my thoughts and knowledge to contribute to the web not to compete with one another. Another thing is that Tech actually dictated what i am today and since opening this blog i have changes 180 degrees and im planning to change back to the old perspective. My life really turned upside down with the presence of this blog. But thats not the point i still continued to keep my word which i always use on people who are feeling down never give up no matter what the cause is. In times also i keep in mind that its not always being the best but the important is doing your very best. So im going to keep my word by sharing my knowledge to the world and not going off track again. Thats also where i get the thought of the moto which is bringing you a step closer to technology. All in all i can say that im very pleased with what this blog has done to me even if theres some side effects but one thing which i ultimately believe is that hard work does pay off and all it takes is one moment in time to change your life forever.

HTC One X 64 GB
The HTC One X+, an update to the HTC One X is here. The HTC One X+ has the Samsung Galaxy S III in its sights.
HTC has improved the HTC One X+ by giving it a larger 2100 mAh battery, which is 300 mAh larger than the 1800 mAh in the HTC One X. This matches the battery on the Samsung Galaxy S III. To make up for a absence of MicroSD card slot, HTC now offer two models of the HTC One X+. One with 32 GB like the older One X, and the other with 64 GB.
HTC has also upped the performance of the HTC One X+ by increasing the speed of the processor to 1.7 GHz from 1.5 GHz.
The HTC One X+ also comes with a new red accented theme (like the Sensation XE) and comes out of the box with Android 4.1.1, Jelly Bean.
The official price of the HTC One X+ is a hefty Php32,800, but at CMK Cellphones it is selling for just Php27,900 for the 64 GB model. This is just Php2.400 higher than the Php25,500 selling price of the older One X. With a larger battery, more storage and a faster processor, the One X+ looks like a better deal the the One X.
The Samsung Galaxy S III has now gone down in price, so it costs just as much as a Galaxy S III. What do you think? Will the One X+ be able to take some of the Galaxy S IIIs sales?

Smart ‘Shock Proofs’ all postpaid plans
Smart Communications Press Release.
[18 April 2013] Say goodbye to unexpected data charges as wireless leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) introduces its Anti-Bill Shock (ABS) feature across all of mobile and broadband postpaid plans.
“‘Bill shock’ is now a thing of the past,” said Smart Postpaid Business Head Kathy Carag. “From today, all data charges from our postpaid offerings will be capped to certain amount so that our subscribers could enjoy worry-free surfing 24/7,” she said.
Data charging has been identified to be one of the leading causes of ‘unexpected charges particularly for subscribers using Internet-enabled smartphones.
Based on internal data, a number of mobile users are not aware that their new phones automatically connect to data services. This ‘background connection’ incurs charges which may result to excessive monthly bills.
With ABS in place, Smart Postpaid users who are not enrolled to either an Unlisurf or Always On package will be charged the default rate of P10 per 30 minutes until his or her data charges reach a total of Php1,200.
To illustrate, a Smart All-In Plan 500 subscriber who has consumed P300 worth of voice and SMS services and unknowingly keeps his or her data connection on will only be charged a maximum of Php1,500 until the end of the billing cycle.
Similarly, Smart Bro Postpaid users who exceed their monthly allocation will also be charged the default rate of P10 per 30 minutes until his or her data charges reach P999.
If a Smart Bro Flexisurf Pocket WiFi Plan 599 subscriber for example exceeds the 50 hour monthly allocation, he or she will only be charged an additional Php400 for the excess data charges. The plan then essentially turns into an unlimited surfing plan until the next billing cycle.
“It’s worry-free mobile surfing at its best,” said Smart Broadband Internet and Data Services Head Lloyd Manaloto. “Come try out the best data connection only from the network with four times more fiber power,” he said.
Manaloto refers to Smart and parent firm PLDT’s modernized mobile network which has been super-charged with 54,000kms of fiber optic cables (FOCs).
FOCs, unlike legacy copper wiring, uses beams of light to deliver and receive data from the core network to the base station and vice versa.
“Our fiber-powered network can handle millions of calls, billions of texts, and trillions of bytes of data, said Manaloto. “We have the only truly future-proof network in the Philippines.

Samsung ATIV S The New Face of Windows Phone
Samsung has officially announced the first Windows 8 Phone ATIV S. It is essentially a Windows Phone 8 version of Samsungs Android powered Galaxy S III. The ATIV S packs a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display with a 720 x 1280 HD resolution and has Gorilla Glass 2 for protection. Inside is a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. While not a quad-core, this dual core chipset packs the advance Qualcomm Krait processor which allows it to match and even outrun its quad-core competitors. This is backed up by 1 GB of RAM. At the back, there’s an 8MP primary camera with 1.9MP secondary camera at the front. This a a big phone at 137.2 mm x 70.5 mm x 8.7 mm but it weighs in at just 135 grams.
Now this is not just a re-skinned Galaxy S III. Samsung has improved its design and allows for a massive 2,300mAh battery to fit in that slim 8.7 mm frame. Connectivity options include HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3 and NFC. I expect an LTE version will also be released.
Internal storage is either 16 GB or 32 GB, but Windows Phone 8 now supports memory expansion slots and the Samsung ATIV S has a microSD card slot to allow expansion of its 16GB or 32GB built-in storage.
Pricing and availability is yet to be confirmed, but I am pretty sure this smartphone will hit the shelves immediately after Microsoft officially releases the Windows Phone 8 in October this year. Expect a price similar to the Galaxy S III.
When the first Windows Phone 7 device launched, they were competitive in terms of hardware, but the software was a bit behind the curve. By the time Windows Phone 7.5 was out, the supported hardware was outdated due to lack of multi-core processor support. With Windows Phone 8 and phones like the ATIV S, the Windows Phone platform fight Apple and the Android world on equal footing.

Asus Nexus 7 Unofficially in the Philippines
Googles popular Asus Nexus 7 tablet is not officially released in the Philippines yet. This Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) tablet sports a 7-inch WXGA (1280x800)
IPS display, has a gaming oriented NVIDIA Tegra 3 T30L 1.2Ghz Quad-Core inside and a large 432 5mAh battery which is good for 9 hours of use. For internal storage is comes in two versions, one with 8 GB of storage, and the other with 16 GB. There is no MicroSD card slot.
Several local seller have been selling small numbers of these. Thinking about getting one I found Widget City has them listed at Php12,750 for the 8 GB model and Php15,750 for the 16 GB model. Given that the US prices are US$199 and US$249, I was expecting it to cost about Php10,500 for the 8 GB model, and Php13,000 for the 16 GB model.
Still with a budget 13-16K, I would pick the Nexus 7 over any of its Android competitors. Even the higher end 16 GB model at Php15,750 does not look bad in terms of price when you compare it to the Php18,990 iPad 2 which has a dual core processor and a much lower resolution display.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T and PC Pro 700T
A lot of people, experts and common users has looked at Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system, many have proclaimed it to be a failure. This is not too surprising. In an industry where pundits crave innovation, the first reaction to anything new is resistance. The last major leap in desktop operating system interface was all of eighteen years ago, with Windows 95. Desktop and laptops designs have improved, but essentially have not fundamentally changed in over two decades.
So, when you look at the new Windows 8 operating system and interface, it was not designed around what you are used too. For those old enough to remember, there was a time that people questioned the need for icons and a mouse too.
Windows 8 is designed to run on new hybrid devices. Part personal computer, part tablet. Unlike Apple’s iOS which was designed to run purely on the touchscreen, Windows 8 was designed to bridge the gap between the new and the old. The Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T is a device which illustrates well what Windows 8 is all about.
Whether you like the new interface, one thing in undeniable, Windows 8 is lighter and faster. This allows it to run competently enough on low powered chipsets like Intel’s Z2760 processor. This processor which scores just 679 points on the Passmark CPU benchmarks, really gives you little more than the power you had on your netbook, but with much better HD video and 3D performance.
Using such a low power processor, allow place PC in a frame of a less than 10 mm thick 11.6-inch, 1.65 pound, tablet. The new Windows 8 tiled interface is designed to allow Windows to be used in tablet mode. The low powered processor also allows for long battery life, and Samsung actually claims 14 hours of battery life. In the real world, it is more like 7 to 9 hours.
Now the Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T is a PC, and not an ARM tablet. It will run all the applications you used to run on your Windows desktop, keeping in mind the limits of the Intel’s Z2760. This software designed to be manipulated with a keyboard and mouse, is not very touchscreen friendly, so the Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T comes packaged with a keyboard with a touchpad, and a stylus. Attaching the tablet to the keyboard dock converts it into a 3.2 pound laptop.
The Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T comes with a 1366 x 768 resolution display, 2 GB or RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via a microSD card slot, and a HDMI and USB 2.0 port. With keyboard, stylus is comes in at Php35,900, which is not a bad price when you compare it to tablets with 64 GB of internal storage.
The Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T has a more powerful sibling, the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T. This is priced at Php59,900. The additional money gets you a sharper 1920 x 1080p display, a much more powerful Intel Core i5-3317U processor, double the RAM and storage at 4 GB and 64 GB, respectively, and a USB 3.0 port.
The tablet port of Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T is a ticker 12.5 mm and weighs in at a heavier 1.89 pounds. The Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T is also package with a more premium and heavier keyboard dock made of metal, which brings weight of the keyboard plus dock to a bit over 3.5 pounds. The heavier dock is needed to keep balance with the heavier tablet.
The main drawback of the more powerful Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T is that it needs active cooling to keep the Intel Core i5-3317U processor running. With a higher resolution screen, more powerful processor, double the RAM and active cooling, you can expect this to have less endurance than its lower power sibling. Samsung claims up to 8 hours. A more realistic figure is about 4-5 hours in real world use, which in line with what you expect from an 11.6-inch Ultrabook.
Samsung Preparing Full HD AMOLED Panels For Mass Production

These new 5" display will be used in high end device and will have a 440PPI. The first phone which is expected to be featuring this display is the Galaxy S IV. But there is still one problem as Samsung Display might not get everything done in time which could lead to delayed product launches. Stay tuned for our Galaxy S IV rumor roundup which will start next month

Huawei Ascend Y300 The new entry level king
Huawei has just released its Ascend Y300 in the Philippines. The Ascend Y300 is a entry level phone, priced at Php5,490. At that price it squarely aims at low cost locally branded handsets from Cherry Mobile, CloudPhone, MyPhone and Starmobile. An Huawei does succeed.
The basic specifications are par for the course:
- 4-inch WVGA (480 x 800) display
- 4 GB internal storage expandable via a MicroSD card slot
- 512 MB RAM
- 1 GHz Dual Core Processor
- 5 MP primary camera with LED Flash
- 0.3 MP front camera
- HSPA
- WiFi
- Bluetooth
- A-GPS
But there are three key features which put it head an shoulders above the competition.
Gorilla Glass. This highly scratch and shatter resistant material is standard on mid-level and high end devices, it is nice seeing it in a phone at this price.
1730 mAh battery. The typical 4-inch Android comes with a 1500 mAh battery. The Ascend Y300 has a battery 15% larger than the typical 4-inch Android phone.
On the minus side, for some, the phone is not a dual SIM device.
All, in all, while it cost a few hundred more than the Cherry Mobile Thunder, and all of 1.5K more than a burst or the flair, I think Jelly Bean, Gorilla Glass, larger battery and Huawei branding is more than enough to justify the additional price.
